LASIK at FreeVis: Step by Step

Are you nearsighted (myopic) and have been dependend on glasses forever?

Every evening you feel the imprints of your glasses on the brigde of your nose. You cannot do anything without glasses. Yes, you tried contacts, but it just did not work.

You are not alone. Many people are unhappy because they are not satisfied with vision correction by either eyeglasses or contact lenses.

Refractive surgery is an excellent alternative to these ordinary methods of vision correction.

Using LASIK as an example, we will demonstrate the steps necessary for treatment with laser surgery.

You arrange your initial appointment at one fo the FreeVis LASIK Centers.

Please copy our LASIK Informational Brochure on your hard drive, read through it, and write down any questions you may have. Bring everything to your initial examination and consultation.

In the pleasant environment of our office, you will receive an eye examination in which we determine your vision and measure the surface of your cornea (cornea topography). At the conclusion of this exam you will have a consultation with the ophthalmologic surgeon who will perform your surgery. Together, you will decide which procedure is most suitable for you. The surgeon will answer any questions you may have and inform you of any risks or possible side effects associated with the surgery.
Please note that in some cases it is necessary to use eye drops to dilate the pupils for the examination. Should this be necessary in your case, you should not operate any vehicle or machinery for several hours.
If you wear contact lenses, you do not need to remove them prior to the initial exam.
After your consultation, you will set up appointments for the surgery on both eyes. If you wear soft contact lenses you need to refrain from using them one week prior to surgery and wear your eyeglasses instead. If you use hard lenses two weeks are needed for the cornea to recover. Although not noticeable, there is wear on the cornea when using contact lenses. By refraining from using contact lenses the cornea has time to recover, thus providing optimal conditions for the surgery.

On the day of surgery, your vision will be examined again. We will perform the surgery on both eyes at the same day. Prior to surgery, the eyes will be anesthetized with eye drops. There is no need for a painful injection for the surgery! You will also be given a tranquilizer and a pain reliever. For the first 2 to 3 hours after surgery, you may have a foreign body sensation as well as increased tearing.

Please note that because of your eye shield and tranquilizer you will not be able to drive home yourself. Feel free to bring somebody to accompany you, or we will be happy to order a taxi for you. You may resume eating and drinking as usual after surgery. Reading and watching television are permissible as long as you feel comfortable.

On the following day, the postoperative examination will be performed on both eyes.

Imagine this: After this examination, most patients are able to drive a car again - without glasses!

You will not need to wear an eye shield but may not, under any circumstances, rub on the eyes or apply make-up for about a week. Also, you should refrain from physical exercise and from using a swimming pool, sauna, or solarium for two weeks.
