LASIK Up-to-date Newsletter
How good is LASIK in numbers?
Since all FreeVis LASIK Centers gather and evaluate all pre- and post
operative data of every LASIK surgery, we are in the position to supply
highly accurate data for LASIK precision, using the most up-to-date
diagnostic equipment and Lasers.
For instance, the FreeVis LASIK center of the University of Mannheim
and the FreeVis LASIK Center in Munich performed a total of 7.320 operations
in 2001 and 2002. 56.7% of the patients treated were female, 43.3% male.
The average age was 38 (18 to 69).
It is known that the accuracy of the LASIK procedure decreases with
the degree of refractive error. But what exactly does this mean?
The results shown here are broken down according to the diopter numbers:
1. Benchmark: Myopia (near-sightedness) to –3 dpt
After LASIK, with slight myopia, 91% of the operated patients immediately
achieved perfect vision, and did not need glasses. This was true for
97% after follow-up surgery. In 6% of the patients follow-up surgery
was required. If a “residual flaw” up to one diopter maximum,
which is acceptable, is taken into account, the “success”
rate without follow-up surgery is 98%.
2. Benchmark: Myopia (near-sightedness) from -3 to –5
dpt
With average myopia, 86% of the patients could put their glasses away
after the operation, 94% achieved this after follow-up surgery. Follow-up
surgery was performed on 9% of the patients. If a “residual flaw”
up to one diopter maximum is taken into account,(which is acceptable),
the success rate without follow-up surgery is 96%.
3. Benchmark: Myopia (near-sightedness) from -5 to –8
dpt
With strong myopia, 82% of the operated patients immediately had perfect
vision and did not need glasses, 90% achieved this after follow-up surgery,
which took place in 13% of the cases. If a “residual flaw”
up to one diopter maximum is taken into account, the “success
rate” without follow-up surgery is 92%.
4. Benchmark: Myopia (near-sightedness) above –8 dpt
Since the results become less satisfactory as myopia (nearsightedness)
increases, we only operate on patients with extreme myopia (more than
–8 dpt) in exceptional cases, and only after extensive consultation.
With myopia of above –8 dpt, 34% of the operated patients did
not need glasses. 50% only achieved this after follow-up surgery. Follow-up
surgery was performed in 18% of the cases.
5. Benchmark: Hyperopia (farsightedness) up to +3 dpt
With slight and average farsightedness 85% of the operated patients
could put away their glasses immediately. 93% achieved this after follow-up
surgery (9% of the cases). With the “residual flaw” from
up to one diopter, (which is acceptable), the “success rate”
without follow-up surgery is at 97%.
